Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical engineering encompasses everything from structures such as machinery, e.g cars, through to mechanisms such as human joint replacements; from micro-electro-mechanical devices such as miniature piezoelectric gyroscopes for aircraft guidance systems to systems for controlling complex processes such as road, rail or air traffic.
According to JobWeb.com, mechanical engineering is one of the top ten degrees in demand by the industry. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects an increase of more than 10 percent in the number of mechanical engineering positions through 2014 and the demand for engineers in general is likely to increase during the next 20 years as industrial machinery and processes become increasingly complex. Emerging technologies in biotechnology, materials science, and nanotechnology will also contribute to new job opportunities for mechanical engineers, as the skills acquired through earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering can often be applied in other engineering specialties.
Career Path in India & Overseas
Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest engineering disciplines. Engineers in this discipline work on power-producing machines such as electric generators, internal combustion engines, and steam gas turbines. They also work on power-using machines such as refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment, machine tools, material-handling systems, elevators and escalators, industrial production equipment, and robots used in manufacturing. Some mechanical engineers design tools that other engineers need for their work. In addition, mechanical engineers work in manufacturing or agriculture production, maintenance, or technical sales while many become administrators or managers.
